Though Baguio is commonly known for its fresh fruits and vegetable produce, its Pine trees, and its cool breeze, another notable product from the summer capital is its silver industry, which is highlighted in one of the most successful jewelry business in the country based in Baguio City - Ibay’s Silver shop. What started as a home business in 1974 has now bloomed to over 28 branches in Luzon and is a main stopover for ‘pasalubong’ in any Baguio-held tour.
Wearable art pieces, all handcrafted
Despite the increasing competition of jewelry stores within the vicinity, Evelyn Ilbay, the owner of the shop, takes pride in having all their jewelry crafted by hand, and not using casting machineries that in her opinion creates less artistry in jewelry. To combat the rising demand, she hires silversmiths willing to do the work manually, thereby producing accessories that hold more value than her competitors. She’s also made sure to branch out digitally, by having an online shop and showing new designs with added stones and other affordable gems to suit the varying tastes of her customers.
Walkable distance from Mines View Park
After admiring the sights at Mines View Park, tourists can either walk to the main store Ibay’s Silver shop (which will take approximately 11 minutes), or drive there via Modesta Street, which will take about 3 minutes. A branch of Ibay’s is also available at SM Baguio City.
