Information about Lamitan City Tulip Garden
Lamitan City Tulip Garden
Located in the province of Basilan and first opening in September 2019, the Lamitan City Tulip Garden is not what it seems at first glance. This colorful garden is made up of almost 50,000 differently colored tulips that are actually made of discarded plastic bottles. This garden filled with forever tulips features red, pink, blue, yellow, purple, orange, and ivory plastic flowers. This means that apart from being the perfect spot for travel photos, the garden is also a good example of how trash can be turned into something beautiful. Since it opened, it has become one of the popular tourist spots in Mindanao.
The plastic bottles used for this project were actually from the trash collected from the residents. The late former Mayor Rose Furigay saw the creation of the tulip garden as a way to remind Lamitan City residents that they should lessen their use of single-use plastic. The mayor wanted to make sure the plastic bottles did not go to waste that even the walkways around the garden are made of shredded plastic bottles mixed with cement, sand, and gravel.
Tickets and entry
Entrance to the garden is free.
Best time to visit
Because it is an outdoor attraction, it’s best to visit the Lamitan City Tulip Garden during the dry season, which usually runs from December to May. To avoid the scorching heat of the sun, it’s also better to avoid visiting at noon and instead going to the garden in the morning or afternoon.
