Santo Niño Church, also known as the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño, is a significant Roman Catholic church located in Tacloban, Leyte. Founded in 1770 by the Augustinian missionaries, the church holds deep historical and cultural importance for the people of Tacloban and the entire region. It is dedicated to the Santo Niño (Holy Child), the image of the child Jesus Christ, which is revered for its role in a miracle believed to have ended a cholera epidemic in 1889 when the image was thought to have been lost at sea and was returned to the port of Tacloban.
In recent years, the church underwent extensive restoration work following the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013. Despite the heavy damage, the church was successfully rebuilt and continues to serve as a place of worship and pilgrimage. On November 1, 2021, the church was elevated to an Archdiocesan Shrine, further solidifying its significance within the Archdiocese of Palo.
Today, the church stands as a symbol of the community’s faith, resilience, and history, drawing visitors and pilgrims alike. Its beautiful facade and serene interior offer a peaceful space for reflection, prayer, and admiration of its historical legacy.
