Information about Tinuy-an Falls
Tinuy-an Falls
Located in the city of Bislig in Surigao del Sur, Tinuy-an Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall. At 95 meters wide, it is believed to be the widest falls in the Philippines. Its name comes from the Cebuano word Tinuyo-an, which means “with intention.” This is related to the legend of the Magdiwata Mountain natives, who were enslaved by tribesmen. To regain their freedom, the natives developed a plan that included intentionally pushing the boat of their enslavers over the falls.
Tinuy-an Falls has three tiers, and the widest and tallest of those tiers is the third one, which is what you will often see pictured in travel photos featuring the falls. Because of this, it has been referred to as a mini version of Niagara Falls and is considered one of the top tourist spots in Mindanao.
While here, you can swim in the natural pools, trek to the different levels, or even enjoy birdwatching—some birds are endemic to the area.
Tickets and entry
There is a minimal entrance fee of PhP50 per person. If you want to ride a bamboo raft, you can do so for PhP300 for 7 people. Life vest rental is also available for PhP30 per person. There is also a parking fee, which depends on the vehicle you are using.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Tinuy-an Falls is in the morning. If you want a bigger chance of seeing the rainbow created by sunlight and the water, you’ll need to be there between 9 AM and 11 AM. To see fuller cascades, the best months to visit are November to January, which are usually the wettest months. Just keep in mind that the areas near the falls and the natural pools will be more slippery during this period.
