Matinloc Island

Matinloc Island is mostly considered at the highpoint of El Nido’s island-hopping option. The island is home to Matinloc Shrine, also known as the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin. Visitors are lured by the fantastic views from the cliffs, as well as the mysterious story of the island itself. 

Legend has it that the owners found hidden treasure on this spot so they purchased the island and built the shrine and convent to hide the digging up of the treasure, which was said to have originated from World War II.

The shrine and convent were built during the 1980s, along with a mansion positioned adjacent to it. Years of neglect gave the structures a rundown look, but visitors still keep on dropping by and locals still go on a pilgrimage here every year.

Aside from the shrine, the amazing views and photo-taking opportunities are the biggest attractions of the island. 

Don’t miss the chance of getting some of the best aerial views of El Nido while you’re here. Take a short climb up the limestone hill to get to the small natural viewing deck. Look for the “tabletop” where you can take the best panoramic photo of the island.

How to get there

Take a Roro bus from Puerto Princesa to El Nido. If you're coming from El Nido Poblacion, take a ferry or enter a guided tour that includes a stop at Matinloc Island.

Entrance fee

Tour C island-hopping costs differ per person. Additional expenses include eco-tourism development fee, snorkel gear rental, private boat rental depending on the number of passengers and size of the boat), and whole-day kayak rental. The tour fee includes lunch, which usually consists of grilled meat, seafood, and fresh fruits and vegetables. The boats dock in Tapiutan Island at noon and they prepare the meals at one of the beaches, usually at Talisay Beach.
