Summary
Description
Learn about Cuyonon heritage when you go on this private heritage day tour to Sibaltan in El Nido, Palawan. This heritage tour of Sibaltan in El Nido already comes with the assistance of a tour guide and air-conditioned transfers so you don’t have to worry about arranging these yourself. You also have the option of purchasing packed lunch as an add-on to this tour.
Your driver and your guide will pick you up from your hotel or resort in El Nido in the morning. You’ll then make your way to Sibaltan, a coastal village in El Nido. The village is home to the Cuyonons, a group of people who used to live in Cuyo Island, located off the northeastern coast of the Palawan mainland. As the population of the Cuyonons grew, they had to migrate to Sibaltan to ensure that there were enough resources to share with all its people. They are believed to be one of the oldest civilizations to inhabit Palawan.
During your visit, you'll be able to experience the old style of kuyunon, a traditional massage. You will also see Balay Cuyonon, a replica of a traditional Cuyonon house, which uses bamboo and nipa. The house also serves as a museum, and inside you’ll see items that you would find in a traditional Cuyonon home around 100 years ago, including fishing gear and kitchen items.
There’s also a replica of the pangko, a traditional boat that Cuyonons used to trade with the nearby islands. You’ll also learn more about the Cuyonon heritage and culture through one of the village’s storytellers composed of Cuyonon elders. Listen as they share with you the Cuyonon’s way of living, and feel free to ask questions.
If you booked an add-on packed lunch, you can enjoy it in the village. Just remember to clean up afterward and don’t leave any litter. Before leaving, don’t forget to check out the Buri bags that you can buy as souvenirs. The Cuyonon women themselves weave these bags.
