These Siargao tourist spots will be closed for rehabilitation

As Siargao Island gains more recognition, its natural attractions draw thousands of visitors each month, impacting the local ecosystem. To preserve these spots, the Siargao local government occasionally closes them for rehabilitation. If you're planning a trip to Siargao, take note of the temporary closures and check the details below to know which tourist spots will be closed and their scheduled reopening dates.

Sugba Lagoon 

Rehabilitation schedule: Closed from January 10 to February 10, 2024

Nestled in the small coastal town of Del Carmen in Siargao, Sugba Lagoon is a hidden gem located within an enchanting mangrove forest surrounded by mountains. It features a 4,000-hectare swimming area and offers numerous activities such as kayaking, dive-board jumping, board paddling, and more.

However, based on the latest Siargao news, the Sugba Lagoon will be closed for one month starting Wednesday, January 10, 2024, up to February 10, 2024, for its annual environmental rehabilitation. 

“The temporary closure is following Municipal Ordinance No. 045 declaring 32 days of annual tourist holiday for the environmental recovery and the rehabilitation of the lagoon,” the Del Carmen local government unit (LGU) said in a statement last Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

The rehabilitation of Sugba Lagoon has been an annual practice since 2016, contributing to its sustainable management. The closure of this tourist spot aims to give the lagoon's ecosystem a chance to recover from the impact of unregulated tourism. 

Mayor Alfredo Coro II of Del Carmen compared the closure of Sugba Lagoon for a month to giving it a vacation. He emphasized the importance of preserving the lagoon. During this time, repairs to tourism facilities in the lagoon will take place, and visitors are encouraged to explore other attractions in Del Carmen and other municipalities in Siargao. 

Magpupungko Rock Pools 

Rehabilitation schedule: January 19 up to February 19, 2024

One of the best things to do in Siargao is to visit Magpupungko Rock Pools. Located in Pilar, Siargao, these are natural pools that emerge during low tide and are submerged at high tide. It’s best visited during low tide to see its stunning crystal blue waters and the chance to enjoy cliff jumping. The area also features a famous limestone boulder and a secluded beach beyond the pools. When dry, the beach has soft sand that makes each step enjoyable.

Take note that the Pilar local government unit (LGU), through the Sangguniang Bayan, has enacted Municipal Ordinance No. 14, Series 2023, designating January 19, 2024, to February 19, 2024, as a "tourism holiday" for Magpupungko Beach, Lagoon & Rock Formation. 

During this time, all recreational activities, including swimming, strolling, and photography, are strictly prohibited at the mentioned Siargao tourist spot. It's important to note that other tourist spots in the municipality of Pilar and Siargao remain open, and you can still join Siargao tours.
