Francisco Balagtas Monument

Francisco Balagtas Monument is a relic honoring Francisco Balagtas and is located in Malolos, Bulacan. The Bulacan Heroes Park and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines are close by the monument.

Francisco Balagtas was a writer and poet who was born on April 2, 1788, in Panginay, Bigaa, Bulacan to parents Juan Balagtas and Juana Cruz. Juan Sisiw served as his poetry professor while he was a student at San Juan de Letran and Kolehiyo de San Jose.

His well-known work, Florante at Laura, was widely regarded as a tribute to Maria Asuncion Rivera, whose other lover was the reason for his imprisonment. After that, he remained in Udyong, Bataan, where he eventually fell in love with Juana Tiambeng and married her. On February 20, 1862, he passed away.

2014 was the year the statue created by renowned artist Julie Lluch was installed. It depicts Balagtas seated and gazing out at the sea while appearing to be writing.
