Balobok Cave

Located in Lakit-Lakit, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, in the Philippines, the Balobok Cave, also known as the Balobok Rock Shelter, is an archaeological site and cave. It’s one of the must-visit caves in the Philippines.

It was home to one of the oldest human settlements in Southeast Asia, with a history dating back to 8,000 to 5,000 years ago. In the 1970s, it was utilized as a refuge by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

In 2016, it was officially recognized as an Important Cultural Property. Recently, a bill was submitted to the Bangsamoro Parliament aiming to declare the area as a heritage zone under the Bangsamoro regional government in 2022.

Past diggings in the cave have revealed a plethora of historical objects such as polished stones, flake tools, bones, and even animal remains, estimated to originate from 8,800 years ago.
