Information about Old Badjao Cemetery
Old Badjao Cemetery
Old Badjao Cemetery is an old burial ground in Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City. The locals utilized some areas of the island as a burial site prior to the present time when visitors began to enjoy the pink sands of the Great Santa Cruz Island. The Badjao and Sama Bangingi, two indigenous tribes, frequented the cemeteries.
The burial sites also depict the Badjao's seaborne civilization. Unlike in Roman Catholic cemeteries, the tombs of the Badjao in the burial place are smaller and simply ornamented. The boats represent the tribe's reverence for the sea.
How to get there
There is one route that leads to Sta. Cruz Island may be reached via motorized boat from Zamboanga's popular Paseo del Mar.
