Information about San Jose Church
San Jose Church
San Jose Church, also known as the Ivana Church, is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Joseph in Ivana, Batanes. In 2008, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines designated the church as a National Historical Landmark.
The Dominicans founded the church of Ivana as a chapel in 1787. In the beginning, there were three mission chapels in Ivana: Kadpidan, Said, and Radiwan.
The church was built with the intention of serving the people of Sabtang, Ivana, and Uyugan. The Sabtang settlers had been forcefully resettled in Ivana, but were later able to return to their island, decreasing the congregation's population.
Space in the church's nave that was no longer used was closed off in 1844. After being partly devastated by an earthquake in 2000, the church was later rebuilt in 2001 under the tenure of Father Gumersindo Hernandez.
