Information about Sumilon Island Sandbar
Sumilon Island Sandbar
Located off the southeastern coast of Cebu Island, Sumilon Island is a tranquil tropical destination. It has 24 hectares of land, which is surrounded by clear blue waters. It is home to the first marine protected area in the country, which was made official in 1974. Its waters are also a great place to snorkel or dive, and those lucky enough may spot black tip sharks swimming in the area.
Its most famous feature is its sandbar, which is made of powdery white sand. What makes it unique is its changing shape and location, which depends on the tide and the season. Here you can lounge in the sand, wade in the shallow waters, or go for a swim in the sea.
Tickets and entry
There is a Php50 entrance fee to enter Sumilon Island. If you want to stay longer than one day, you may book a stay at Bluwater Sumilon Island Resort, the only accommodation on the island.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit the island is during the dry months, which are usually from November to May. If you want to enjoy the sandbar, visit during low tide, which usually starts at 2 PM. Note that the sandbar itself is closed every Wednesday for cleanup and rehabilitation, but you can still visit the rest of the island on those days.
