Information about Monfort Bat Sanctuary
Monfort Bat Sanctuary
Monfort Bat Sanctuary is located on Samal Island, about 1 kilometer east of Davao City, Philippines. According to Guinness World Records, it is the world's biggest single colony of its type.
Since recorded history, the Monfort Bat Sanctuary has been home to a large colony of 2.3 million Rousette fruit bats. They cover 75% of the ceilings and walls of their 245 ft long cave.
Since the early 1900s, the Iigo-Monfort family has cared for the property. Norma Monfort currently owns the 57 acres of property and its 1.8 million fruit bats. She fenced in the land to deter any potential bat hunters. She also employed 24-hour guards to preserve the bats. Norma Monfort was recognized a Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Hero in 2011.
