Information about Samal Island Mariculture Park
Samal Island Mariculture Park
Established by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in 2001, the Samal Island Mariculture Park in Davao Del Norte is the first commercial marine culture park in the country. The 244-hectare park was created to help the livelihood of small-scale fishermen by helping solve the problem of dwindling fish in marine waters. Instead of catching fish, these fishermen can grow them in fish cages that the government lets them rent for a minimal fee. Currently, the park has over 10 multi-cage setups. Because of the success the park enjoyed, other mariculture parks were set up all over the country.
When you visit the mariculture park, you will be able to see the fish cages and learn about how the fishermen earn their livelihood with the help of the park.
Best time to visit
Unlike most areas of the country, Samal Island only experiences a few typhoons every year, making it a great destination year-round. To ensure a big chance of sunny weather during your visit, plan your trip any time from December to May.
