Santa Rosa De Lima Chapel

Located in Barangay Chavatan in Batanes’ Sabtang Island, Santa Rosa De Lima Chapel is known for its cogon-thatched roof. Although this type of roofing used to be common among Ivatan churches, currently, this chapel is the only one with this type of roofing. The woven cogon can withstand the stormy weather that Batanes is known for, but it has to be changed after a couple of decades. The structure took eight years to complete, with construction spanning from 1951 to 1959.

Although the chapel is relatively small in size, tourists will be able to spot it easily thanks to its pastel-colored facade. 

Best time to visit

If you want to avoid rainfall during your visit, head to Sabtang Island during the dry months, which are usually from March to June. For cooler weather, you may visit during January or February but be prepared for possible rainfall.
