St. Williams Cathedral, also known as the Laoag Cathedral, is the seat of the Roman Catholic church in the region. Established in 1612 by Augustinian Friars during the Spanish colonial period, it is an imposing structure built in the Italian Renaissance architectural style. Nearby is the Sinking Bell Tower, so named because it literally sinks to the ground at a rate of one inch annually. It is believed to have been built in 1707 and has survived several earthquakes since. While you’re there, you can’t miss Aurora Park, which is located right at the center of town, surrounded by the cathedral and Sinking Bell Tower. The plaza features a multi-tiered obelisk built in 1881, and the statue of Maiden Pamulinawen stands on top of a fountain in the middle of the park.
Next, you’ll be headed for the Malacañang of the North, a museum in Paoay that used to be the holiday residence of Ferdinand Marcos during his presidency. Afterward, you’ll proceed to Paoay Lake, the largest lake in the province, before going to the famous Paoay Church. A UNESCO world heritage site, the church was built in 1710 and is a foremost example of a Spanish colonial earthquake baroque architecture. Before heading back to the hotel, you’ll be going to your last stop at the Sand Dunes, an 85km sandy coastal desert, and beach located near Suba Beach. Here you’ll ride a 4x4 and get the chance to try sandboarding.
