Canigao Island, located in the town of Matalom, is one of Leyte’s tropical paradises ideal for summer getaways. It is a small island that can be easily accessed by boat from the mainland. The site has been a favorite destination for many Leytenos since 2005 and has also earned fame among Filipino travelers.
Being one of the developed islands in the area, tourists can find several facilities set up in Canigao Island. There is an information center, a treehouse, a couple of cottages, and grilling areas. Visitors would also notice a big netted container filled with plastic bottles, which is the caretakers’ way of maintaining the cleanliness of Canigao.
Apart from those, locals and tourists alike would also enjoy a sight of sky blue water and white shoreline fronting a dark green forest. Its long stretch of beach is blanketed with warm and powdery soft sand where visitors can relax, while the trees backdropping the beach provides a warm shade to those looking for refuge from the scorching heat of the sun.
There are tons of things one can do in Canigao Island. For a pleasant relaxation, one can hang a hammock between trees and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Visitors can also enjoy a pleasant leisure walk by the beach while exploring the subtropical trees and the various types of seashells and birds. You can also drop by one of the oldest lighthouses in Leyte that can be found on the island.
Canigao Island also offers more fun and challenging adventure. Guests can try snorkeling and diving on the north and west part of the island, where the flourishing coral gardens and abundant sea creatures are typically located. Other activities in Canigao include swimming, playing beach volleyball or Frisbee, fishing, kayaking, jet-skiing, and camping.
