20 minutes away from Laoag City is another breathtaking geological site facing Suba Beach, Paoay Sand Dunes. Spanning an area of 88 square kilometers, it is a continuation of the Ilocos Sand Dunes that is filled with sand dunes of various heights, with a scenic view of the coast at the top.
Like La Paz Sand Dunes, Paoay Sand Dunes is famous for its scream-worthy 4x4 jeep rides and lessons on sandboarding. It is also famous as a location site for known local films like Himala with Nora Aunor, Pedro Penduko, and Panday; and international films as well, such as Mad Max (1981), Born on the Fourth of July with Tom Cruise (1989), and Platoon with Johnny Depp (1986).
By renting a 4x4, locals can take you to the bamboo art installation dedicated to Ms. Nora Aunor for movie Himala, titled Himala sa Buhanginan Structures, or to the shoreline of the Suba Beach, which are both great sites for photo taking.
Getting to Paoay Sand dunes is attainable by car. Take the Marcos Ave. onto Laoag-Paoay road, turn left to Suba Beach road, then continue until the dock area. The Sand dunes is on the left side of the road. Guests can rent a 4x4 for 1 hour and have sandboarding lessons.
