Explore the beauty of the southern section of Batan Island with this full-day tricycle tour in Batanes. Taking you to picturesque cliffs, limestone churches, and rolling hills, this day trip best appeals to solo travelers and small groups wanting to immerse themselves in the local culture while enjoying the sights.
After being picked up from your accommodation within the Basco area, you will make your way to Paderes Viewpoint, where you will alight near the famous “Blow Ur Horn” signage. Here, you will see a stunning view of Mount Iraya and the waves approaching the shorelines of Basco. From there, you will head to the Chawa View Deck next for another round of sightseeing. The view deck is situated along the steep mountainside and has a stairway that will lead you to the beach below.
A little over a kilometer away from the view deck is the Mahatao Shelter Port. Serving as the refuge of the boats from the fierce waves, you will see here colorful local boats that make for a perfect photo backdrop. You will also see the Mahatahataw Idjang nearby, a mountain fortress that serves as the locals’ protection from the raging winds and rains.
You will then be taken to the Busbusan Lighthouse before having a quick stopover and Tayid Lighthouse, both of which provide stunning views of the sea. Enjoy the refreshing sea breeze here and pose for creative photos with the ocean as your backdrop. From there, you will make your way to San Carlos Borromeo Church of Mahatao next. The original chapel was replaced by its lime and stone facade after it was severely damaged by a storm a couple of years back.
You will see another lighthouse at the Spanish Lighthouse & blank book archive before you stopover for lunch at Maivanaman. The restaurant serves local cuisines you will surely enjoy. Once you get back on the road, you will head next to a handful of other interesting points on the island, including the San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel, Alapad Hills & Rock Formation, LORAN (Naval Base), Our Lady of Miraculous Medal in Itbud, Song Song Ruins, and Motchong Viewpoint.
After posing for some quick photos at these attractions, you will be driven to the San Antonino De Florencia in Uyugan. This church stands out from the rest of the chapels on the island as it is painted in pink. Some four kilometers from the chapel is the Honesty Coffee Shop. Here, you are expected to pay according to the amount listed on the board and log them in a notebook. There is no staff manning this store, giving you a glimpse of how the Ivatans value honesty.
From there, you will head next to the San Jose el Obrero in Ivana and Church Ruins before stopping by House of Dakay, the oldest house in Batanes that dates as far back as 1887. Another historical relic in south Batan is the Tuhel Spanish Bridge that was constructed in the 1800s. You will cap off your day with a visit to Homoron White Beach and Blue Lagoon. Have a short walk here or take a dip into the cold, calm waters before you are taken back to your accommodation in Basco.
