Beginner-Friendly Batanes Hike | Mt. Matarem Climb

Get active and spend a leisurely day outdoors by hiking up Mt. Matarem, the second highest peak in Batan Island in Batanes. The southern counterpart of the iconic Mt. Iraya offers an easy to moderate hike even for beginner climbers. This half-day sightseeing and hiking tour is suited for beginner and novice hikers and nature-lovers who’d like to get active while enjoying refreshing views. After being picked up at your accommodation in Basco, you’ll make your way to Brgy. San Vicente, the drop-off point in the southern part of the island roughly 13 km away from the town capital of Basco. Mt. Matarem is not regularly visited by travelers, but a specialized guide familiar with the area will be there to assist you and ensure your safety. The trek takes you through scenic trails winding through an inactive volcano that stands 473+ meters above sea level. The mountain gets its name from the local term for “steep” which sums up its rugged contours and trails. While trail features are similar, the overall steepness and hiking experience is much friendlier than hiking Mt. Iraya. You’ll pass through idyllic pasturelands lined with evergreen tree and get up close to local flora and fauna. The trail will pass through woodlands with various clearings so you can enjoy sightseeing and good overlooking views from different vantage points as you hike up. After a few hours of hiking gradually through grasslands and forests, you’ll reach the steepest path and final stretch towards the summit. Your efforts will be rewarded once you reach the top as you will be witnessing a panoramic view of the entire Batan island from the peak. Unlike Mt. Iraya, whose peak is almost always obscured by clouds, good views are guaranteed at Mt. Matarem because of its low altitude. Marvel at the view of Mt. Iraya and the airport, the coasts of Basco and Mahatao facing the Pacific Ocean, the old lighthouse and Fundacion Pacita; the sight of hedgerows and Rakuh e Payaman, followed by the southern town of Uyugan, Ivana to the southwest and Sabtang Island from a distance. Basic Leave No Trace principles should be observed, including taking with you any trash that you're bringing  up the mountain. The 700-meter trek to the peak is relatively easy and perfect for beginners.
